Based on seed and fruit characters, this species would seem to belong to the genus Phemeranthus (as Phemeranthus aurantiacus (Engelm.) Kiger). However, based on molecular evidence, coupled with the planate leaves and extended stem of this species, have shown that it really belongs in the genus Talinum[
