Description
An on-line version of the flora with an excellent description of the plant including a brief mention of plant uses.
].
It was first described by W.J. Hooker in the London Journal of Botany 6: 244. 1847. The name, however, is clearly wrong since the plant was obtained from the Colorado Valley in western N. America and the genus Silphium is only found in eastern and central N. America. We can find no trace in the literature of this taxon being referred to another genus (the most likely is that it is referable to a species of Balsamorhiza) and, indeed, as of 2019 this taxon is still accepted as a species in The Plant List (http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/record/gcc-50753) and in the Global Compositae Checklist (https://compositae.landcareresearch.co.nz/?Page=NameDetails&NameId=E70E2474-CA8B-4D48-8E15-5E1EED3E4E9C)
