The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food. It has potential for use in soil stabilization projects and also can be used in ornamental plantings.
Podocarpus spinulosus has a very large extent of occurrence although its area of occupancy is limited. It is only locally threatened but it is considered that there has not been a significant decline of the global population. Localized threats include mining of white sands in places such as Moreton Bay, urban development throughout the coastal parts of its range and the conversion of native forests for agriculture and other uses. It occurs in several protected areas across its natural range, from coastal dunes to upland plateaus. The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[

Agroforestry Uses:
The plant's ability to grow well in poor sandy substrates near the sea and its layering habit would make it a useful stabilizer of drifting sand in warm temperate to subtropical climates. Research into its potential for invasiveness in other countries and habitats should be conditional if introduction is considered in this context[
