General Information

Pistacia weinmanniifolia is an evergreen shrub or small tree usually growing from 1 - 15 metres tall[, , ].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use, mainly of its resin - this resin is traded in local markets[]. The plant is grown as an ornamental[].
Pistacia weinmanniifolia is widely distributed and documented to be a dominant species, but habitat loss from the development of modern agriculture is also recorded within this species' range suggesting that it may be in decline. The plant is classified as 'Data Deficient' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[].

Pistacia species generally grow best in a sunny position in a deep, well-drained soil preferably of a light texture[].

Medicinal

Both the leaves and the resin obtained from them are used in traditional medicines for the treatment of dysentery, enteritis, influenza, traumatic bleeding, headache and lung cancer[].

Other Uses

Aromatic compounds extracted from the leaves are used for making candles and incense[, ].

The plant is a secondary genetic relative of the cultivated Pistachio (Pistacia vera), and so it has the potential for use as a gene donor for crop improvement[].

Propagation

Pre-soak the seed for 16 hours in alkalized water[], or for 3 - 4 days in warm water[], and sow late winter in a cold frame or greenhouse[, ]. Two months cold stratification may speed up germination, so it might be better to sow the seed in early winter[]. The germination is variable and can be slow. Prick out the seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle and grow on the plants for at least their first winter in a greenhouse. Plant out into their permanent positions in early summer and consider giving some protection from winter cold for their first year or two outdoors[].
