Useful Temperate Plants

Morella caroliniensis

(Mill.) Small

Myricaceae

This species has often been known as Myrica heterophylla Raf., in the literature, However, the work by Wilbur R.L. (The Identity and History of Myrica caroliniensis (Myricaceae); Rhodora, Vol. 104, No. 917, pp. 31-41, 2002) has shown that Myrica caroliniensis was the original and correct name.
In addition, a further work by Wilbur R.L. (The Myricaceae of the United States and Canada: genera, subgenera, and series; Sida 16 (1); 93-107, 1994), proposed dividing the genus Myrica into three genera. This seems to be gaining acceptance and so this species has now been moved from Myrica to the genus Morella[

In addition, Wilbur R.L. posits (Wilbur R.L. (The Identity and History of Myrica caroliniensis (Myricaceae); Rhodora, Vol. 104, No. 917, pp. 31-41, 2002) that the taxon formerly known as Myrica pensylvanica Mirb.(Morella pensylvanica (Mirb.) Kartesz) is not distinct from Morella caroliniensis and should be united with that species. At the present (29/01/2023) we are not following this specific recommendation and are maintaining Morella pensylvanica as distinct[
