The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and is commonly grown as an ornamental and a hedge plant. Within its native range, it has the potential for use as a pioneer species in restoring native woodland.
Ligustrum sinense is commonly grown in temperate gardens as an ornamental and as a hedge, It can often escape from cultivation and, in the wild, it can form impenetrable thickets and crowd out native vegetation. It may displace the native shrub layer of invaded forests and prevent regeneration of native species. It is capable of spreading rapidly to the exclusion of almost all native species and is tolerant of a wide range of ecological conditions. It is a threat to many habitats and is very difficult to control once established. The plant is considered invasive in several countries including the USA, Australia and New Zealand[
