General Information

Larix × czekanowskii is an erect, deciduous tree with a broad conical, often irregular crown; it can grow around 30 - 40 metres tall with a straight or curved trunk 100 - 150cm in diameter[].
A hybrid of natural origin, arising from near Lake Baikal in Siberia as a result of a cross between Larix gmelinii and Larix sibirica. The tree is harvested from the wild for its valuable timber.

Larix × czekanowskii is native to northern Asia, growing in continental and sub-arctic climates with very long winters where temperatures can fall as low as -55°c[].

Other Uses

The bark is a source of tannins[].

The wood of this larch is durable and used in construction, traditionally for log houses in Siberia, for which the wood is roughly hewn to shape, but untreated. It has been widely used for railroad sleepers e.g. on the famous Trans Siberian Railroad. Larch wood is also milled for construction timber and veneer, and is pulped for the paper industry[].
