The fine-grained wood of this tree was much harvested in the past, but logging is currently banned. The species is not recorded in cultivation, but may be present in a few botanic gardens, though the only known specimen in the northern hemisphere is at Tregrehan in Cornwall, England[

Halocarpus kirkii is the only species in the genus to attain large tree size and consequently it has been subject to overexploitation, with many of the forests in which it occurred now gone. The plant is classified as 'Near Threatened' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[
