We are following the treatment in the Flora of China[], which accepts this taxon as a distinct species. Some other treatments treat it as a form of Euonymus hamiltonianus (as Euonymus hamiltonianus Wall. var. maackii (Rupr.) Kom.)

General Information

Euonymus maackii is a deciduous shrub or small tree that can grow from 1 - 10 metres tall. The bole can be around 15cm in diameter[, ].
The tree is sometimes harvested from the wild for use as a source of latex, and possibly also as a food. It has been trialled for cultivation as a rubber crop, and is sometimes cultivated as an ornamental in gardens[, ].

Known Hazards

We have seen no specific reports of toxicity for this species, but there is a report in the Flora of the USSR Volume 14 that all parts of the plants in this genus are more or less poisonous[].

Habitat

Shrubby formations in river valleys, coastal plains etc, usually on alluvial sands, occasionally on dry ridges with open forest[]. Edges of woodlands and forests; at elevations up to 1,000 metres[].

Cultivation Details

Euonymus maackii is a very cold-hardy plant, able to tolerate temperatures down to around -30°c when fully dormant[].
Thriving in almost any soil, including chalk, it is particularly suited to dry shaded areas[]. Prefers a well-drained loamy soil[].
Cultivated for its latex in Russia, producing most when grown in open arid habitats[].

Young leaves - boiled[, ].This report should be treated with some caution since many members of this genus are poisonous.

The plant is a potentially good sand-binder in situations with sufficient moisture[].

Other Uses

The roots and stem yield up to 6% gutta-percha, a non elastic form of latex that can be used as an electrical insulator and in making plastics etc[, ].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a cold frame[]. Stored seed requires 3 months cold stratification so should be sown as early in the year as possible in a cold frame[]. The seed can take 18 months to germinate[]. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
