General Information

Euonymus lucidus is an evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow from 4 - 15 metres tall. The bark is thick and rather corky[, , ].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and source of materials. It is used as an ingredient in commercial cosmetic preparations. The plant is sometimes grown as an ornamental.

Known Hazards

We have seen no specific reports of toxicity for this species, but there is a report in the Flora of the USSR Volume 14 that all parts of the plants in this genus are more or less poisonous[].

Cultivation Details

Euonymus lucidus is not a very cold-hardy plant, being able to tolerate short periods with temperatures down to around -10°c when fully dormant.
Thriving in almost any soil, including chalk, it is particularly suited to dry shaded areas[]. Succeeds in light shade but does not fruit so well in such a situation[]. Grows best in sheltered woodlands[]. Prefers a well-drained loamy soil[].

The wood is white with a light-red tinge. It is compact, very close and even-grained, moderately hard. It is used for carving[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a cold frame[]. Stored seed requires 3 months cold stratification, so should be sown as early in the year as possible in a cold frame[]. The seed can take 18 months to germinate. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
