General Information

Euonymus hamiltonianus is a deciduous shrub or small tree that can grow from 3 - 20 metres tall. The bole can be up to 25cm in diameter[].
The plant is harvested from the wild as a source of materials, and possibly also as a medicine and a food.

Known Hazards

We have seen no specific reports of toxicity for this species, but there is a report in the Flora of the USSR Volume 14 that all parts of the plants in this genus are more or less poisonous[].

Cultivation Details

Euonymus hamiltonianus is a verycold- hardy species with some forms tolerating temperatures falling to around hardy to about -25°c or lower[, ].
Thrives in almost any soil, including chalk, it is particularly suited to dry shaded areas[]. Prefers a well-drained loamy soil.
A very ornamental plant[], there are a number of named varieties selected for their good fruiting and autumn colour[].

Edible Uses

Young leaves - they must be well boiled[, ].This report should be treated with some caution since many members of this genus are poisonous.

Medicinal

A methanol extraction of the fruits has been shown to have significant action against various forms of cancer, including lung A-549, Pancreatic MiaPaca and Colon HCT-116[].

Other Uses

The roots and stem yield gutta-percha, a non elastic form of latex that can be used as an electrical insulator and in making plastics etc[, , ].

The white wood has a slight yellow tinge. It is close and even-grained, soft and heavy[]. It is used for turning items such as spoons and for engraving[]. The wood is used to make combs[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a cold frame[]. Stored seed requires 3 months cold stratification so should be sown as early in the year as possible in a cold frame[]. The seed can take 18 months to germinate[]. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
