Elsholtzia stauntonii is a perennial plant with much-branched stems that become more or less woody and persist; it can grow 70 - 170cm tall[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for use as an insecticide and also as an ingredient in commercial cosmetic preparationss.

An extract of the whole plant is used as an ingredient in commercial cosmetic preparations as a hair conditioner and skin conditioner[].

The plant contains essential oils and has insecticidal properties. It has been used traditionally by Chinese farmers to protect stored products from a range of insect pests[].
Trials have shown it to be an effective fumigant for treating the cigarette beetle, (Lasioderma serricorne), whch is one of the most serious pests of stored tobacco, tobacco products, cereal grains and processed foods throughout the world[].
