Agroforestry Uses:
Elsholtzia argyi can grow successfully in soils that are contaminated with various heavy metals, including copper, cadnium, zinc and lead. In addition, it has the ability to concentrate these contaminants into its leaf and shoot growth. It can also grow up to around 160cm tall in such soils, producing moderately large quantities of organic matter. It can thus be used as an effective hyperaccumulator and phytoremediator of contaminated soils - the top growth being removed from the site on a regular basis in order to gradually reduce levels of the contaminants to safe levels. In addition, the plant material removed can be used as a source for recovering and reusing the metals[
