Clematis nepaulensis is not a very cold-hardy plant, only being able to tolerate short periods with temperatures down to around -5°c when fully dormant. It succeeds outdoors only in the milder regions of the temperate zone.
Prefers a position where the base of the plant is in cool shade, but the plant can grow up through trees or shrubs into a sunny position[
