The plant contains the compound alpha-viniferin. It has been shown that this compound has several activities within the body; it inhibits the inflammatory response; it inhibits the activity of topoisomerase and thus exhibits anticancer effects; and it inhibits the acetylcholine hydrolytic enzyme, thus helping to improve memory[1880.

Other Uses

An extract of the roots is used as an ingredient in commercial cosmetic preparations as a skin conditioner and anti-wrinkle agent[
