Camellia taliensis has a large native range covering Yunnan, northern Thailand and Myanmar. However, there are reports of the species being exploited in China, and its habitat is being lost. Since about the year 2000, wild Camellia taliensis plants have been 'domesticated' by clearing natural forest around the specimens, or by digging out wild trees and planting them in gardens. Genetic studies have been carried out and the species is suffering from severe fragmentation. The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[

Species in this genus generally prefer a peaty, more or less lime-free soil with a pH in the range 5 - 7, but most will grow well in an open loam to which ample leaf-mould has been added, so long as it is well-drained and lime-free. Most species are understorey plants in forests (preferably oak or pine) and prefer a warm, sheltered position with moderate shade; at least at the hottest time of day[

Known as 'Ye cha' or 'Gantong cha' by the local people in Yunnan Province, where it is highly valued as a tea plant. The well-known Pu’er tea, made from organic leaves of wild Camellia taliensis plants in Yunnan Province, enjoys a price 10 - 100 times higher than cultivated tea trees in the market. For this reason, natural subpopulations of the species have become threatened due to over-picking driven by economic incentives[
