The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food and source of oil. It was sometimes cultivated as a food crop in the past.
Brassica elongata has the potential to spread over large areas, especially in disturbed habitats. Over most of its alien range, impacts of its presence are not yet known, but in a few areas it has competed with native flora for resources. In Poland, for example, it invades disturbed habitat and has competed with native vegetation for resources and displaced a few xerothermic plants[
