Brachyglottis greyi is native to the warm temperate climate in the North Island of New Zealand, where it seldom experiences frost.It is only hardy in the milder regions of the temperate zones - it is not hardy at Kew Gardens in London for example but about 100 kilometres south, in the maritime climate of southern England, the plant grows well, even in exposed positions[, ].
Succeeds in a sunny position in most well-drained soils[], tolerating maritime exposure[].

Very closely related to Brachyglottis laxifolia but less hardy than that species[].

Very tolerant of trimming and of maritime exposure, the plant can be grown as a windbreak hedge[]. Fairly slow growing, though eventually making a dense hedge to 1.5 metres tall[].

Propagation

Seed - sow spring in a greenhouse. Only just cover the seed. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter.
