Benincasa hispida is a robust, annual climbing plant producing stems up to 6 metres long that scramble over the ground or climb into other plants, supporting themselves by means of tendrils. It can be grown at elevations up to 1,500 metres.It is only likely to succeed outdoors in areas of the temperate zone with consistently warm summers lasting5 months or more. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 24 - 30°c, but can tolerate 12 - 37°c[
