Basella alba is a plant of the moist tropics, where it is found at elevations up to 1,500 metres. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 23 - 27°c, but can tolerate 10 - 35°c[
]. It is not tolerant of frost. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 2,000 - 2,500mm, but tolerates 700 - 4,200mm[
]. It requires a minimum daytime temperature of 15°c if it is to keep growing vigorously[
