General Information

Adina rubella is a deciduous, densely-branched, shrub usually growing 1 - 3 metres tall but sometimes reaching 6 metres[].
The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine. It is sometimes grown as an ornamental in gardens and is said to be suitable for stabilizing slopes.

Cultivation Details

Adina rubella is a moderately hardy plant - it can tolerate temperatures down to around -10°c without damage and will usually tolerate -20°c - although top growth will be killed back at this temperature, the plant will usually resprout from the base in the spring[[].
Succeeds in full sun to partial shade, growing best in a moist, acidic, well-drained soil. Tolerant of heavy soils, wet conditions and seasonal flooding[].

Medicinal

The inflorescence is astringent, carminative, haemostatic, stimulates the circulation[]. A decoction is used in the treatment of acute and chronic dysentery, enteritis, intestinal parasitical diseases, ulcers and traumatic bleeding[].
