General Information

Pseudotsuga sinensis is an evergreen tree with a spreading crown; it can grow up to 50 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be 100cm in diameter[, ].
The tree is harvested from the wild as a commercial source of timber and as a local use as a source of materials. It is sometimes used in reforestation projects[].
The species has undergone more than a 30% population reduction in the last three generations (75 years) due to loss of habitat and exploitation for its timber. The plant is classified as 'Vulnerable' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[].

Cultivation Details

Pseudotsuga sinensis is not a very cold-hardy plant, able to tolerate temperatures down to around -8°c when fully dormant. It grows in China in areas with a moist, temperate or warm temperate climate with an annual precipitation ranging from 1,000 - 2,000mm[].

The plant takes around 25 years from seed before it produces seed[].
Very large trees are rare in the wild as they have been extensively logged in the past; hence the economic value of this species has diminished as it appears not very suitable for plantation forestry[].
The species is very rare in cultivation as an amenity tree and is virtually restricted to a few arboreta and botanic gardens[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown in the autumn to winter in a cold frame so that it is stratified[]. The seed can also be stored dry and sown in late winter. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in light shade in the cold frame for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Seedlings tolerate light shade for their first few years of growth. Cones often fall from the tree with their seed still inside[].
If you have plenty of seed then it can be sown in an outdoor seedbed in early spring[]. Grow the plants on for at least two years in the seedbed before planting them out in late autumn or early spring.
