Pinus sabiniana is found at elevations up to 1,800 metres in the Mediterranean-type climate of central California, with its hot, dry summers and cool, moister winters. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 250 - 1,780mm. It is not a very cold-hardy plant, being able to tolerate short periods with temperatures falling to around -5 and -10°c when fully dormant[
