General Information

Maackia fauriei is a deciduous shrub or tree that can range in height from around 2 metres up to 8 metres. The bole can be up to 25cm in diameter[].
The tree is harvested from the wild for local use as a medicine and source of materials. It is used commercialy to provide ingredients for cosmetic preparations and is sometimes grown as an ornamental.

Cultivation Details

Succeds in a sunny position in most well-drained soils[].
Although many species within the family Fabaceae have a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria, this species is said to be devoid of such a relationship and therefore does not fix atmospheric nitrogen[]

Medicinal

The flowers are used to treat hypertension, apoplexy, haemostasis, vaginal bleeding, and dystocia[].

An acetone and then ethyl acetate extract of the leaves has been shown to be highly toxic to prostate cancer cells[].

Other Uses

An extract of the branches is used as an ingredient in commercial cosmetic preparations as a skin conditioner[].
The essential oil obtained from the leaves is used as an ingredient in commercial cosmetic preparations as an antioxidant[].
An extract of the stems is used as an ingredient in commercial cosmetic preparations as an antimicrobial, antioxidant, hair conditioner and skin conditioner[].

A yellow dye is obtained from the bark[].

Propagation

Pre-soak the seed for 24 hours in hot water and then sow it in a cold frame in the autumn[]. The seed can also be pre-soaked and sown in late winter in a greenhouse[]. Variable germination. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
