Brachyglottis rotundifolia is a much-branched, evergreen shrub or a tree, growing up to 6 metres or more tall[].
The wood is sometimes used. The plant is often grown as an ornamental, and makes an excellent wind-tolerant hedge.
Brachyglottis rotundifolia has a very wide distribution, large population, is not currently experiencing any major threats and no significant future threats have been identified. The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2018)[].

Cultivation Details

Brachyglottis rotundifolia is not very frost hardy - it is said to be able to tolerate temperatures down to about -5°c. It only succeeds outdoors in the mildest regions of the temperate zone, growing best in maritime situations[].
Succeeds in a sunny position in most well-drained soils[]. Plants are very tolerant of maritime exposure[, ].
The flowers have a rather unpleasant scent[].

Agroforestry Uses:

The plant is very tolerant of maritime exposure and can be grown as a windbreak hedge. Fairly slow growing, though. It is best left untrimmed[].

Other Uses

The leaves have been used as postcards. The back of the leaf, when recently picked or fully dried, can be written on and is said to take ink well.

The silvery wood is used for turnery and inlay work[].

Propagation

Seed - sow spring in a greenhouse. Only just cover the seed. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
Cuttings of half-ripe wood, 5 - 8cm with a heel, mid summer in a frame. Overwinter in a cold frame and plant out in late spring[].
